語源
「chimeric」は新ラテン語・現代ラテン語の「chimericus」に由来し、さらにギリシャ語の「chimaira（χίμαιρα）」にさかのぼる。『キメラ』は本来合成された獣（もとは「雌ヤギ」を指すことも）を意味した。
「chimeric」はギリシャ語の『khimaira』がラテン語の『chimera』となり、新ラテン語の『chimericus』を経て英語の形容詞『chimeric』になった。
当初は神話上の獣（および語源的には「雌ヤギ」）を指したが、徐々に「異種混成・複合的」を意味するようになり、生物学的な専門用語や比喩的な『空想的・非現実的』の意味も得た。
