語源
「bardo」はチベット語の「bar do」から来ており、「bar」は「（〜の）あいだ」を、「do」は「状態」または「存在」を意味する。
「bardo」は20世紀初頭にチベット文献の翻訳を通じて英語に入った（特にW. Y. Evans-Wentzの『チベット死者の書』の翻訳）。またサンスクリットの概念「antarabhava」（中有）に対応する。
当初は死後のチベット仏教に特有の中間状態を指したが、次第に一般的な移行期・境界的な期間を指す比喩としても使われるようになった。
