語源
「barbel」は中世ラテン語の「barbula」（ラテン語「barba」の小辞形）に由来し、「barba」は「ひげ」を意味した。
「barbula」は古仏語／中世ラテン語を経て中英語の「barbel」となり、最終的に現代英語の「barbel」になった。
当初は「小さなひげ」を意味していたが、次第に魚のひげ状の感覚器官やそれに因む魚の名称を指すようになった。
