語源
「barbel」は中世ラテン語の「barbellus」に由来し、さらにラテン語の「barba（ひげ）」にさかのぼる。
中世ラテン語の「barbellus」（「barba」の小形）から（古フランス語の影響を経て）中英語に入り、最終的に現代英語の「barbel」になった。
当初は「小さなひげ」を意味していたが、次第に魚の口のひげ状の突起や、そうした突起を持つ魚の名称を指すようになった。
