「barbarism」はギリシャ語の『barbarismos』に由来し、『barbaros』は「外国の・異質な・理解できない」を意味した。
『barbarismos』はラテン語の『barbarismus』になり、古フランス語の『barbarisme』や中英語を経て現代英語の『barbarism』になった。
当初は「外国語のような聞き取れない話し方」を意味していたが、次第に「野蛮な振る舞い」や「語法上の誤り（不適切な語や表現）」という意味に広がった。
