語源
「banzai」は日本語の『万歳』に由来。『万』は「1万」、『歳』は「年」を意味した。
『万歳』は「長寿を願う掛け声」として日本語で用いられ、19世紀後半から20世紀初頭の日本との接触を通じて英語に取り入れられた。20世紀には『banzai charge（万歳突撃）』として、第二次世界大戦の自殺的突撃を指す表現も英語で定着した。
