『bantam』はマレー・インドネシア語起源で、具体的にはジャワ島の港町『バンテン（Banten／Bantam）』の地名に由来し、小型の鶏の交易と結びついていた。
『bantam』は初め欧州の貿易語を経て英語に入り、当初は『バンテン産の（鶏）』を示したが、やがて小型の家禽全般を指す語になり、さらに比喩的に『小柄だが気の強い人』にも用いられるようになった。
