語源
「banditti」はイタリア語の「bandito」から来ており、「bandire」（後期ラテン語由来）は「追放する／告示する」を意味し、「bandito」は「追放された者」「無法者」を意味した。
イタリア語の「bandito」から英語の「bandit」へ入り、複数形としてイタリア語由来の「banditti」が英語でも用いられるようになった（主に文語・歴史的用法）。
当初は「追放された者」を指したが、次第に「盗賊・盗賊団の構成員」を意味するようになった。
