語源
「baksheesh」はペルシア語の『bakhshish』に由来し、動詞語根『bakhshidan（与える）』から来ている。
『bakhshish』はヒンドゥスターニー／ウルドゥー語の『baksheesh』を経て、18～19世紀にペルシア語や南アジアとの接触を通じて英語に入り、現代英語の『baksheesh』になった。
当初は「贈り物や施し」を意味していたが、次第に「便宜を図ってもらうための小額の支払い（賄賂や心付け）」という意味も帯びるようになった。
