語源
「badlands」はラコタ語に由来し、特に「mako sica」という語句から来ている。ここで「mako」は「土地」、「sica」は「悪い」を意味した。
19世紀に探検者や入植者が先住民の地名や（場合によってはフランス語の「les mauvaises terres」など）を訳して使ったことから英語に入った。北米のそのような地域を指す地名や、類似の地形全般を表す語として定着した。
当初は「通行に不向きな土地」や「悪い土地」を指していたが、次第に特有の浸食された不毛の地形を意味するようになり、また比喩的に危険・無法な地域を指す用法も生じた。
