語源
「bacteriostasis」は近代ラテン語／現代の学術語から生じ、接頭辞の「bacterio-」（ギリシャ語の『bakterion』に由来）とギリシャ語の「stasis」を結合した語であり、『bakterion』は「小さな棒（桿）」を、『stasis』は「停止・立ち止まること」を意味した。
「bacteriostasis」は19世紀後半から20世紀初頭の科学用語形成で、接頭辞「bacterio-」と語尾「-stasis」を結合して作られ、細菌の活動の停止または抑制を表す語として用いられるようになった。
もともとは細菌の『停止』という概念を伝えていたが、時間とともに『細菌の成長や複製の抑制』というより特定の意味で使われるようになった。
