語源
「autopoint」は複合語で、ギリシャ語語根『autos』（自己）と英語／フランス語の『point』（古仏語 'point'、ラテン語 'punctum' に由来、先端・鋭い先）から成る。
『autopoint』は『Auto + Point』として作られ、20世紀初頭に特定様式の機械式鉛筆の商標名として採用された。やがて単語形の『Autopoint』がブランド表記として定着し、時に同種の鉛筆全般を指す一般名詞化が起きた。
当初は「自己で芯が出る・自動で先が出る」という意味合いを持っていたが、時間とともにAutopoint社の鉛筆を指す語になり、さらに派生して類似の機械式鉛筆全般を指す用法に広がった。
