語源
「autochthony」はギリシャ語の「autochthon」から来ており、「autos」は「自己／自ら」、「chthōn」は「地（つち）」を意味した。
ギリシャ語の「autochthon」はラテン語・後期ラテン語の学術的用法を経て、古典ラテン語や学術語として英語に取り入れられ、「autochthony」になった。
当初は「土から生じる／土に生まれた」という意味だったが、次第に「ある土地に固有であること」や「ある集団がその土地に本来的に属するという主張」を表す意味へと変化した。
