語源
「autochthonism」はギリシャ語の『autochthōn』に由来し、接頭辞の『auto-』は「自分自身」、『chthōn』は「地」「土地」を意味した。
『autochthōn』はニューラテン語の『autochthōnus』を経て英語の『autochthon』『autochthonism』になり、学術用語として現代英語に定着した。
当初は「土から生まれた（その土地に由来する）」という意味だったが、次第に「原住であるという状態・主張」や科学用語としての「その場で形成された」という意味に発展した。
