語源
「autist」は近代英語に由来し、ドイツ語の「Autist」から借用された。ギリシャ語の要素「autos」は「自己」を意味した。
「autist」はドイツ語の「Autist」、さらに医療ラテン語やギリシャ語の「autismus（autósに由来）」を経て発展し、20世紀初頭に英語の医学用語として定着した。元は自己への退行を指した。
