語源
「aureola」はラテン語に由来し、語幹の「aur-」（ラテン語の「aurum」から）は「金」を意味し、接尾辞「-eola」は縮小辞的要素であった。
「aureola」は中世ラテン語の『aureola』から変化し、古フランス語の『aureole』とともに英語に取り入れられ、現代英語の『aureola』（および別綴りの『aureole』）となった。
当初は「小さな金の物」や「小さな金の輪」を意味したが、次第に「光の輪」および比喩的に「栄光や威光のオーラ」を意味するようになった。
