語源
「augustan」はラテン語の「Augustus」に由来し、「augustus」は「尊厳のある」「荘厳な」を意味した。
「augustan」はラテン語の接尾辞「-anus」（『…に属する、…に関する』を意味する）を伴う形から発展し、「Augustanus」のような中世ラテンの形を経て英語の「Augustan」となり、『アウグストゥスに関する』という意味で用いられるようになった。
当初は「アウグストゥス（皇帝）に関する」を意味したが、次第に「アウグストゥス時代やその様式に関する」という意味に広がり、さらに18世紀英文学の『オーガスタン』運動や比喩的に「荘厳な」を表す用法にも適用されるようになった。
