語源
「attitude」はフランス語の「attitude」から来ており、17世紀に英語に入った。現代フランス語では「姿勢」や「立場」を意味する。
「attitude」はイタリア語の「attitudine」（後期ラテン語の「aptitudo」から）やフランス語の「attitude」を経て、最終的に現代英語の「attitude」になった。
当初は主に芸術や演劇での身体的な「姿勢」や「位置」を指したが、次第に心の「立場」や態度全般を含むように広がった。
