語源
「atomistical」はギリシャ語の「atomos」から来ており、接頭辞の「a-」は「～でない」、語根の「tomos」は「切る」を意味した（ゆえに「分割できない」）。英語では「atom」＋形容詞化接尾辞「-istic」「-al」で形成された。
「atomistical」は17世紀の形容詞形「atomical」や「atomistic」を経て発展した。ギリシャ語「atomos」はラテン語・中世ラテン語の「atomus」を経由して英語の「atom」になり、そこから形容詞形が派生した。
当初は「不可分の粒子に関する」という文字通りの意味だったが、時代とともに「原子論に関する」という意味や、比喩的に「事物を分割された部分として扱う（還元主義的な）」という意味に広がった。
