語源
「atmospherics」は19せいき後はんの英語に由来し、形容詞「atmospheric」に複数形・集合を示す接尾辞「-s」を付けた語で、最終的にはギリシャ語の「atmós（蒸気・蒸気の塊）」と「sphaira（球）」に由来する。「atmós」は「蒸気」を、「sphaira」は「球」を意味した。
「atmosphere」はギリシャ語の「atmós」＋「sphaira」からラテン語・フランス語を経て英語の「atmosphere」となり、そこから形容詞「atmospheric」が生まれ、「atmospherics」はその後に大気現象や雰囲気を指す名詞として成立した。
当初は「地球を取り巻く空気の球（大気圏）」を意味したが、次第に「気象・電気的現象」を含むようになり、比喩的には「雰囲気・ムード」を意味するようになった。
