'astrography'はギリシャ語由来で、特に「星」を意味する'astron'と「記述・書くこと」を意味する'graphia'の要素から来ており、近代ラテン語／英語で接尾辞'-graphy'（〜の記述・学）として用いられた。
'astrography'はギリシャ語の語根から形成され、ニューラテン語や近代英語を経て英語の'astrography'になった。
