「astragal」はギリシャ語の語「astragalos」に由来し、「astragalos」は「足首の骨（距骨）」または「蹄骨（サイコロに使われた骨）」を意味した。
「astragal」はギリシャ語の「astragalos」からラテン語の「astragalus」を経て、古フランス語・中英語の「astragal」となり、現代英語の『astragal』になった。
当初は「足首の骨（距骨）」を意味していたが、形の類似性から「小さな丸いモールディング」を指す現在の意味に変化した。
