語源
「associativity」はラテン語に由来し、語根の「socius」や動詞の「sociāre」（後期ラテン語 'associare'）に由来します。'soci-'は「仲間・連れ」を意味し、接尾辞 '-ity' は状態・性質を表すラテン語 '-itas' に由来します。
「associativity」は、後期ラテン語の 'associativus'／ラテン語 'associatio'（「結びつけること」）から発展し、フランス語や中世ラテン語を経て英語の 'association' と形容詞 'associative' になり、そこから英語で名詞 'associativity' が形成されました。
当初は「物や人を結びつける行為・状態」を指していましたが、次第に数学で「結合の仕方（括り方）が結果に影響を与えない性質」を意味する語として専門化しました。
