結びつき・結合
語源
「associative」はラテン語の動詞「associare」（結びつける）に由来し、接頭辞の「ad-/a-」は「〜へ」を、語根の「sociāre」は「結びつける」を意味した。英語では形容詞を作る接尾辞「-ive」を付けて形成された。
「associare」は古フランス語の「associer」を経て中英語の「associate」になり、さらに「-ive」を付けて英語の形容詞「associative」になった。
当初は「結びつけられた／結合した」という基本的な意味だったが、次第に「結びつきに関する」という広い意味に発展し、数学などでの専門的な意味（結合則を満たすこと）も生じた。
