語源
「aspergation」はラテン語の「aspergere」から来ており，「ad-」（同化している）が「〜へ（方向）」を，「spargere」が「まき散らす／振りかける」を意味した。
「aspergation」は中世ラテン語の「aspergatio」を経て英語に入り，元来は「振りかける行為」を意味した。後に「中傷する」という比喩的意味も派生した。
当初は「（儀式的な）振りかける行為」を意味していたが，次第に「評判を傷つける行為（中傷）」という意味も持つようになった。
