語源
『ascetic』はギリシャ語の『askētēs（ἀσκητής）』に由来し、そこでは『askein』が「鍛える・修練する」を意味していた。
『ascetic』は後期ラテン語の『asceticus』を経て中世ラテン語に入り、中英語や学術的・教会的語彙を通じて現代英語の『ascetic』および複数形『ascetics』になった。
当初は「（霊的・規律的に）鍛錬する者」を指したが、次第に「厳しい自制を行い世俗的快楽を避ける人」を意味するようになった。
