語源
「artificialism」は現代英語で「artificial」に接尾辞「-ism」を付けて作られた語に由来する。『artificial』はラテン語の『artificialis』（古フランス語『artificiel』を経て）に由来し、『art-』（ラテン語『ars, artis』）は「技術・芸術」を、『facere』は「作る」を意味していた。
『artificial』はラテン語『artificialis』から古フランス語『artificiel』、中英語の『artificial』へと変化し、その後『artificial』＋『-ism』で近代に『artificialism』が作られた。
当初は「技術や技巧によって作られたこと」を意味していたが、時代を経て「人工的であること」や「作為を重視する主義・傾向」を示す意味へと広がった。
