語源
「articulator」はラテン語の動詞「articulare」（過去分詞形「articulatus」）に由来し、語根「articul-」は「関節・つなぐ」や「明瞭に発声する」を含意していた。
ラテン語の「articulare」は「articulatus」などの中古ラテン語形を経て、古フランス語や中英語を通じて英語の「articulate」になり、語尾の「-or」によって現代英語の「articulator」が形成された。
当初は「（関節で）つなぐ」「明瞭に発声する」という意味だったが、やがて「音声を生み形作るもの」や（歯科の）機器などの専門的な意味へと変化した。
