語源
『aromatic』はギリシャ語を経てラテン語・フランス語から来ており、もとのギリシャ語『arōma（ἀρώμα）』は「香辛料・良い香り」を意味します。
『aromatic』はギリシャ語『arōma』からラテン語『aromaticus』、古フランス語『aromatique』を経て現代英語の『aromatic』（複数形『aromatics』）になりました。
当初は「香辛料／良い香り」を意味しましたが、現在では「香りがある／香りに関するもの」と、化学では「芳香族化合物」を指す用法に広がっています。
