語源
「arnica」は新ラテン語に由来し、もともとギリシャ語の「arnike」から来ている。そこでは小辞形の「arnion」が「子羊」を意味し（葉のやわらかさにちなむ可能性がある）。
ギリシャ語の「arnike」から後期ラテン語／新ラテン語の「arnica」に変化し、現代の植物名および英語語として「arnica」に定着した。
当初は「子羊（のような）」に関連する植物名だったが、次第に特定の属（Arnica）およびそこから作られる薬用製剤を指すようになった。
