語源
「Armorica」は大陸ケルト語系のゴール語に由来し、複合語『are-mori』（『aremorīca』としても確認される）。ここで『are-』は「（…の）前に／そばに」を、『mori』は「海」を意味した。
『Armorica』はラテン語の『Aremorica』を経て古フランス語の『Armorique』へと変化し、最終的に現代英語の『Armorica』になった。
当初は「海の前の土地」や「沿岸の土地」を意味したが、時代とともに古代ガリアの北西部の地名（固有名詞）としての用法に定着した。
