「areolar」はラテン語の「areola」から来ており、「areola」はラテン語の「area」（面・空間）の小形で「小さな空間・小領域」を意味した。
「areolar」は新ラテン語・学術ラテン語の「areola」から英語に入った。形容詞形は英語（または学術ラテン語）で「areolar」として形成され、「areolaに関する」を意味するようになった。
