語源
「archprince」は接頭辞の「arch-」と名詞の「prince」の合成語。「arch-」はギリシャ語の語根「arkh-」（例：ἄρχω／ἄρχων）に由来し「長、主要」を意味する。「prince」はラテン語の「princeps」に由来する。
英語では、ギリシャ語由来の接頭辞「arch-」（例：archbishopなどの語に見られる）と、中英語／古フランス語経由でラテン語「princeps」に由来する「prince」が結合して「chief prince」を意味する語として成立した。やがて比喩的用法も現れた。
当初は文字通り「最高位の王子」を指したが、時間を経て比喩的に「（しばしば否定的に）ある分野の首魁」を意味するようにもなった。
