語源
「ringleader」は英語に由来し、「ring」（円、集団）と「leader」（導く人）の合成語である。
「ring」は古英語の「hring」（輪）に由来し、ゲルマン祖語 '*hringaz' を経る。「leader」は古英語の「lǣdere」（導く人）から来ている。「ring」が『（陰謀などの）集団』の意味で用いられるようになり、そこから『ringleader』がその集団の首謀者を指す語として成立した。
