語源
「archpoet」は接頭辞の「arch-」（ギリシャ語の『arkhē／arkhos』に由来し「長・主要」の意）と「poet」（ラテン語『poeta』、さらにギリシャ語『poiētēs』に由来し「作る者・詩人」の意）から成る合成語である。
「archpoet」は中世ラテン語の『archipoeta』（著名な詩人の称号・通称）から発展した。中世ラテン語の『archipoeta』が特定の著名な詩人を指し、のちに英語で『archpoet』として用いられるようになった。
当初は特に『Archipoeta（12世紀の詩人）』という個別の人物を指したが、時とともに比喩的に『主要な詩人』の意でも用いられるようになった。
