語源
'archont'はギリシャ語の語『arkhōn』に由来し、語根'arkh-'は「支配する／統治する」を意味した。
'archont'はビザンティン・古代ギリシャ語の『arkhōn』（ἄρχων）から変化し、学術的・神学的ラテン語の'archon(t)-'を経て現代英語の'archont'として用いられるようになった。
当初は市政上の『統治者』を指したが、時代が下るとグノーシス思想や文学で『宇宙的・霊的支配者』を意味する用法も生じた。
