語源
「archon」は古代ギリシャ語の語『ἀρχών』（archōn）に由来し、語根『ἄρχειν』（arkhein）は「支配する、始める」を意味した。
『archon』は古代・ビザンティンギリシャ語の『archōn』から中世ラテン語（Medieval Latin 'archon'）を経て現代英語の 'archon' として借用された。
当初は市政や政治の『指導者／統治者』を意味していたが、時代とともにその核心的意味は保たれつつ、（グノーシス的な）宇宙的・宗教的な意味合いも帯びるようになった。
