「archipresbyter」はギリシア語の『archipresbyteros』に由来し、『archi-』は「長・主」を、『presbyter』は「長老（司祭）」を意味した。
『archipresbyteros』はラテン語（中世ラテン語）を経て中英語に取り入れられ、やがて現代英語の「archipresbyter」になった。
