語源
「arachidonyl」は新ラテン語・化学命名法に由来し、具体的には属名「Arachis」由来の「arachidonic」に化学の接尾辞「-yl（ラジカル・置換基を示す）」が結合してできた。
「arachidonyl」は「arachidonic（アラキドン酸に関する）」から発展した。『Arachis』（ラテン語、語源はギリシャ語「arákhis」＝ピーナッツ）がもとになり、19世紀以降の化学命名で用いられる接尾辞「-yl」が付加されて現在の形になった。
当初は植物（ピーナッツ）を指す語源であったが、やがて酸の名称（アラキドン酸）となり、さらにその誘導基を指す語（アラキドニル）へと意味が変化した。
