語源
「arabesque」はフランス語の「arabesque」から来ており、さらにイタリア語の「arabesco」から派生。'arab-'は「アラブ（アラビア）」を、接尾辞'-esco/-esque'は「～風、～様式」を意味した。
「arabesque」はイタリア語の「arabesco」からフランス語の「arabesque」に変化し、16～17世紀にフランス語を通じて英語に取り入れられ、現代英語の「arabesque」になった。
当初は「アラビア風のやり方・様式」を指していたが、次第に絡み合う装飾模様や、それに似た装飾的性質を持つポーズや楽曲を意味するようになった。
