語源
「aquatint」はイタリア語の「acquatinta」から来ており、'acqua'は「水」、'tinta'は「染め（色）」を意味した。
「acquatinta」はフランス語の「aquatinte」を経て18世紀後半に英語の「aquatint」になり、さらに「aquatinting」のような派生形が生まれた。
当初は文字どおり「水のような色合い」を指したが、時が経つにつれて特定の版画技法やその作品を指す語として定着した。
