語源
「apteria」はギリシャ語、具体的には「apteron」から由来し、「a-」は「〜なし（無）」を、「pteron」は「翼」を意味した。
「apteron」は新ラテン語・学術ラテン語で「apterium」（単数）・「apteria」（複数）として受け継がれ、その後英語の学術用語として採用された。
当初はギリシャ語で「翼がない」を意味していたが、次第に英語の学術用語では「（鳥や昆虫の）羽や翅を持たない部分・無羽部」を指すようになった。
