語源
『aptera』はギリシャ語・新ラテン語に由来し、ギリシャ語の『apteron』（ἀπτερόν）や形容詞『apteros』（ἄπτερος）から来ており、接頭辞'a-'は「〜でない／〜がない」を、'pteron'は「はね／翼」を意味した。
ギリシャ語の『apteron』『apteros』は新ラテン語の『aptera』（中性・複数・集合的形）として採用され、リンネなどの初期の科学的分類で使われた。分類の改訂とともに形式的な分類群としては廃れていった。
当初は『はねのないもの』を意味したが、現在でも意味の核は『無翅』にありつつ、正式な分類名としての使用は減り、歴史的・記述的あるいは固有名詞として残っている。
