語源
「Pterygota」はニューラテン語に由来し、語形は『Pterygota』で、接頭語の'pteryg-'はギリシャ語の『pteryx』（はね）に由来し、接尾辞の'-ota'は集合的・分類学的な語尾として用いられた。
『Pterygota』はギリシャ語『pteryx』（はね）と集合的・分類学的接尾辞との結合からニューラテン語を経て、現代の学術英語における昆虫の亜綱名『Pterygota』として定着した。
当初は文字通り『はねを持つ者たち』を意味していたが、時間を経て有翅昆虫およびその子孫を指す正式な分類名へと変化した。
