語源
「apron」は中英語の『napron』に由来し、その『napron』は古フランス語の『naperon』（『nappe』の縮小形、布・テーブルクロス）から来ています。
中英語の『napron』が『an napron』などの再区切り（rebracketing）を経て現代英語の『apron』になりました。古フランス語『naperon』はさらにラテン語の『mappa（布）』にさかのぼります。
当初は布や小さな覆い（テーブルクロスやナプキンなど）を指しましたが、次第に身体前面を覆う保護用衣類という現在の主要な意味に変化し、そこから舞台前方や空港の駐機場、保護用スラブなどの派生的意味が生じました。
