語源
「apparitor」はラテン語の『apparitōr』に由来し、語幹の『apparēre』は「現れる・存在する」を意味し、接尾辞『-tōr』は「〜する者」を表す。
古典ラテン語の『apparitōr』（「在る者・従者」）が中世ラテン語の『apparitor』となり、公的任務を行う従者という専門的意味を帯びた後、中世末期〜近世初期に英語へ（主に法・教会用語として）導入された。
当初は「出席する者・従者」を意味していたが、次第に「令状を執行する役人」などの専門的な意味に変化した。
