'apotropaic'はギリシャ語の 27 27 27 27 （apotropaios）に由来し、接頭辞'ap o-'は「離れて」を、語根は'trepein'に関連して「（向きを）変える」を意味していた。
'apotropaic'は後期ラテン語の'apotropaicus'を経て英語に入った（学術的・古典的な流入として）。
当初は「（害から）向きを変える」という文字通りの意味だったが、次第に「邪悪を避ける・追い払うことを意図した（魔除け的な）」という現在の意味になった。
