語源
『apostate』は後期ラテン語の『apostata』に由来し、接頭辞の'ap o-'は「離れて」を意味し、語幹は（ギリシャ語由来で）「立つ／離れること」を示した。
『apostate』はギリシャ語『apostatēs』から（後期ラテン語の『apostata』、古フランス語の『apostat』を経て）中英語を通じて近代英語の『apostate』になった。
当初は「離れる者／脱退者」を意味していたが、時代とともに特に「宗教的・政治的信念を捨てる人」を指すようになった。
