'aponeurosal'は最終的にギリシャ語を経て近代ラテン語・新ラテン語に由来する。ギリシャ語の要素'ap o-'は「離れて」、'neûron'は「腱（腱・筋の腱）」を意味し、これらが合わさって腱膜を指す語となった。
'aponeurosal'はギリシャ語の'aponeurōsis'に由来する近代ラテン語・新ラテン語'aponeurosis'から派生し、中世後期～近代英語を経て英語の形容詞として定着した。
