「apologist」はラテン語の「apologista」から来ており、最終的にはギリシャ語の「apologētēs」に由来する。ここで「apo-」は「〜から／離れて」を意味し、「logos」は「言葉・理性」を意味した。
ギリシャ語の「apologētēs」はラテン語の「apologista」となり、教会ラテン語や学術ラテン語を経て16世紀ごろに英語の「apologist」として導入された。
